What type of organisation can participate?
Any not-for-profit, civil society or non-government organisation with a focus on sustainable development, with any number of employees and volunteers, and located anywhere in the world can apply for the Prize.
What size organisation can enter?
There are no restrictions regarding the size of the organisation entering and entries are welcome from small, medium and large organisations based anywhere in the world that have been operating for a minimum of five years.
What format does the entry have to be provided in?
Based on the principles of sustainability, electronic applications are preferred. If you are unable to submit your entry online, please contact the IBLF to assist you in applying, according to your format capability.
How will I know my entry has been safely received?
All entries will receive an electronic acknowledgement of receipt and Unique Entry Reference Number from the IBLF.
When will I be notified about whether or not my entry has been successful?
For the 2008 Prize cycle, the IBLF will notify both successful and unsuccessful entrants about the outcome of their entries no later than 31 January 2009.
What are the tangible benefits of winning the Prize?
The Rio Tinto Prize for Sustainability is a prestigious accolade and leveraging tool for the organisation. The funding provides an opportunity to turn plans into realities that make a difference in the world.
How will we receive the cash associated with the Prize?
The annual US$1M Rio Tinto Prize is paid in three instalments over a three year time period agreed in consultation with the winner.
How is the training grant awarded?
An individual from each grant winning organisation has the opportunity to participate in approved capacity-building and training courses. These courses will be decided in conjunction with IBLF.
Will a representative of the winning organisation be expected to attend the Prize presentation?
Yes – a representative from the winner organisation will be invited to attend the winner announcement celebration. Rio Tinto will reimburse reasonable expenses incurred for one representative to attend (ie. travel, accommodation etc).
